Research Scientist III, Mass Spectrometry

Job Description:

Apex Life Sciences is currently recruiting for a Mass Spectrometry Research Scientist III position in Buffalo, NY.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analysis and interpretation of assay development, high throughput screening, potency and mass spectrometry data
  • Analysis of recombinant protein and antibody drug conjugate samples
  • Potency and selectivity testing
  • Automation of assays and high throughput screening by mass spectrometry
  • Setup and validation of high throughput sample preparation procedures and MS-based assays for the identification of pharmacologically active compounds
  • Experience developing biochemical and MS assays for high throughput analysis by MALDI-TOF, MALDI-TOF/TOF and SPE-MS/MS is preferred
  • Demonstrate substantial expertise in mass spectrometry and biochemical methods development and the preparation of various forms of biological sample for small molecule and/or protein mass spectrometry.
  • Become self-sufficient in the setup, programming and use of all hardware and software provided for the development, validation, analysis, execution and documentation of screening by mass spectrometry assays within 4 months of arrival.
  • Assist in the development and validation of protocols and assays for the analysis of protein and cellular samples in low and high throughput.
  • Assist in the development and validation of bioactivity assays and their transfer to automated equipment including mass spectrometers and liquid handling robotics.
  • Troubleshooting of automated equipment and data analysis templates.
  • Analysis and appropriate interpretation of experimental data. Collation of data and recommendations as reports and presentations for internal and external clients.
  • Assistance in the preparation of project proposals and associated budgets.
  • Effective communication in verbal and written form on results, issues, recommendations and plans.
  • Manage workload and time to perform multiple projects effectively, and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed on a timely basis.

Education and/or Experience:

  • M.S. or B.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry, or other applicable natural science field, including biology or equivalent industrial experience
  • Experience operating and maintaining mass spectrometry equipment (MALDI-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, TOF or an equivalent MS technology for quantitative analysis of complex biological solutions) and interpreting mass spectrometry data.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop MS analysis methods.
  • Experience in the application of high throughput MS to the screening of compound libraries and identification of pharmacologically active compounds is preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Incumbent may be required to obtain/qualify for and maintain the clearance to wear a respirator at a “class B” level or above following OSHA mandated guidelines.
